President's Report

Picture
Are you feeling the way Liz’s dog looks? Without our normal routines and activities it’s easy to slip into apathy and time wasting. The weather is in tune with the general feeling around the place – gloomy, cold and miserable. As far as Rotary is concerned it is vital that we keep active, involved and optimistic. Things may never go back to exactly what they were before and as Covid19 progresses we are all becoming aware of changes in society and the community around us. Planning is one way we can move forward and be thinking about how our club may meet the needs of the community in the coming years.

Many clubs are now actively engaged in planning and in the various President’s meetings it is interesting to hear how other clubs are doing things to engage members and to stay relevant. It is evident that Rotary Club priorities should for the present, be Community and Vocational: Community to support those in need, and Vocational to be engaged with local businesses who also need our support.

Our discussions last week were the first steps in the process of planning for our club and the Strategic Planning Committee will be meeting soon to get the process started.

There are a number of really important District webinars and seminars/forums coming up – Community, Vocational, Social Media and Club Runner so I would like to see as many of you as possible join these and give feedback to the club. You will see the dates further down in this bulletin and emails will be sent out with registration details. Emails and phone calls have never been so important in our communications so please, check your emails regularly.

Last meeting, we welcomed District Governor Elect Daryl Moran who is working hard to get to all the club meetings in the district. Daryl congratulated us on our efforts to stay connected and keep our club functioning via zoom meetings. He said that some Rotary clubs (not in our district) are doing nothing and “riding it out”, which is hazardous to membership with lack of interaction between members causing disinterest. It was great to have Daryl even for a short time and be reassured that we are on the right track, even though it is difficult.

Cluster President’s Meetin

Last week was our first cluster presidents’ meeting. It was great to meet the two Rotaract presidents Christine and Roshni and hear about their projects. One of their projects is Connecting Manningham– it’s on Facebook and advertises and conducts on-line activities that Manningham residents can join in, such as exercise programs, quiz sessions, book club and other social activities. They are very switched on to social media and it would be worth our while having them to talk to us about their activities. Please take a look if you have not already done so.

We also discussed strategic planning, updating of constitution and by-laws, Health and Safety for volunteers, how to make zoom meetings more interesting, ideas for guest speakers, and the Centenary Project. We agreed that our Centenary projects would be:

  • Community lunch for the disadvantaged
  • Rotary Road Signs advertising service clubs/ community associations
  • A celebratory lunch for Rotary and friends.

A subcommittee made up of a member of each club plus the presidents as ex-officio to plan these activities. Gavin has agreed to go on this committee as it was his idea to have the road signs.

Project Idea

It was suggested that we start a fund – which members can contribute to by donating (voluntarily) in lieu of a meal at Natalies’ each week. The fund can be used for gift vouchers or similar for those in need and distributed to an organization such as Doncare or Council social services. This would also support local businesses.

This has been handed to the Community committee to iron out details. Treasurer Kevin can email bank account details. It will be optional, and donations will be confidential. It can be a way we can be doing something to help whilst our other fundraising is on hold.

ClubRunner Workshop
Monday 24th Aug @ 7pm

Picture
Peter Dalmore (District Tech Committee) will conduct a run through of the attributes of ClubRunner and be available to answer any questions you may have. With no District Directory published this year (and probably never again), it’s really important for all Rotarians to know how to access the information that used to be provided in hard copy.

This Club Runner session is to assist all Rotarians to understand how to access the information they need through the District website and through the smart phone app. Find out the quick and easy way to find information about District clubs, Club office bearers and individual Rotarians using the online tools available through the District.

Club Planning Session

We held a useful and productive session looking at the responses to the SWOT analysis. Thanks to Kevin who compiled a power point of the responses.

Thanks also to the members who responded to the survey – there were a lot of points to ponder, and people had thought hard about the club and where we are at, at this point of time.

There was some great discussion about the various points with the obvious main concern being membership and Projects among other things.

The general feeling is that some good planning is long over-due. It will not be done overnight. A committee of four has been formed to come up with a Strategic Plan in the coming months with plenty of opportunity for members to offer suggestions and feedback.

Social Media Workshop
Monday 31st Aug @ 7pm

Facebook looking faded? Website got whiskers? Time to update and put up the club image that will work. Online presence is important, and many clubs report new member enquiries from website and social media activities.

In this current pandemic Social Media is the premium source of contact for your Rotary Clubs, fellow Rotarians, family and friends. Please take advantage to hone your skills and improve your Social Media knowledge.

This workshop presentation and Q & A session will be conducted by our resident Social Media guru Rotaractor PDRR Netania Lim. This workshop will help clubs make the most of an online presence and help to show the world opportunities available through Rotary.
